CENTREVILLE, VA – There is widespread concern that many of the used cars supposedly scrapped under the Cash for Clunkers program may be resold around the country. It is illegal for any of these cars to be sold as a whole unit.
Last week, Carfax added the vehicle identification number of every car accepted into the Cash for Clunkers program to its database. To help used car buyers protect themselves, Carfax now makes this information available for free at www.carfax.com/clunkers.
Nearly 700,000 used cars were accepted into the Cash for Clunkers program. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) required dealerships to destroy the engines of each vehicle and have the bodies crushed or dismantled for parts.
