Black Book analysts forecast an annual depreciation rate of 15% in 2019 as the supply of used cars and trucks increases, up from a "noticeably strong" 12.4% depreciation rate in 2018.
The vehicle depreciation rate will reach 17.8% in 2017 on 17 million new-vehicle sales, slightly higher than the 17.3% mark recorded in 2016, according to latest forecast from Black Book and Fitch Ratings. Prior to the Great recession, annual depreciation trended between 16% and 18%.
The main factor driving depreciation rates will be rising used vehicle supply, varying by vehicle segments.
Last year the depreciation rate on used vehicles reached 12.1 percent, which was lower than the initial forecast. For 2015, depreciation levels are expected to hit 14.5 percent, according to a new report from Black Book and Fitch Ratings.
Depreciation rates on used vehicles are nearing levels not seen since the recession, though the trend will soon reverse and likely lead to marginally higher losses.
