SARASOTA, FL – Ruth Hart-Stephens, vice president of Canadian Business Operations for Manheim, was killed in an automobile accident while vacationing in Sarasota, Fla., on Dec. 28. She was 83. Her 75-year-old passenger, Margaret Baily, also of Canada, was seriously injured. Both women were wearing seat belts.

Hart-Stephens served as president of the National Auto Auction Association (NAAA) in 1994. She was both the first woman and first Canadian to lead the association. Her late-husband Homer Stephens also served as president of NAAA, which made them NAAA’s first husband and wife presidents. In 2002, she was recognized for her life-long achievements and contributions to the association and automobile auction industry by being inducted into the NAAA Hall of Fame. She co-founded Toronto Auto Auctions, known today as Manheim Toronto.
