A new lemon law in New Mexico will help protect consumers who buy used cars. The law, which takes effect New Year’s Day, will force dealers to help pay for some repairs. If a vehicle breaks down within 15 days or 500 miles, the dealer must pay for repairs with the exception of two circumstances. The buyer would only have to pay up to $25 for a fix, however, the dealer assumes no responsibility if he or she can prove the vehicle was misused or abused. Also, a dealer is not responsible for repairs if he or she tells you about problems before the purchase. The law only applies to dealers, not to people who sell privately.
