PLEASANTON, CA – IronPlanet, an auction company that sells used construction equipment, sold $2.9 million worth of trucks and other items in a May 5 online auction, the company said.

The Pleasanton company said a Tennessee bidder bought two 1987 Caterpillar articulated dump trucks for $38,000 and $43,000. Bidders from as far away as Mexico sought to buy the trucks, which are in Illinois. Overall, IronPlanet said, 7,300 people registered for the auction. The bidders were from the United States and 12 other countries.

Typically, IronPlanet said, items were sold to people who lived more than 800 miles away from where it was being sold. And 85 percent of the sales were across state lines.

The company, founded in 1999, said in a news release that it is the third-largest company that auctions heavy equipment. Caterpillar, Komatsu, and Volvo have invested in IronPlanet, the company said.

Besides trucks, IronPlanet sells bulldozers, graders, skid-steer loaders, trailers, excavators, backhoes, farm equipment, chippers, stump cutters, log loaders, and other equipment.
